How to recycle your Christmas leftovers
Once Christmas and New Year are over you’re left with a seemingly endless pile of rubbish that won’t fit in your bin. Thankfully you can recycle the majority of your Christmas leftovers. We’ve put together a useful resource to help you recycle as much as possible this Christmas, from your Christmas dinner leftovers (we can’t believe you didn’t eat it all!) to your Christmas tree. What you can put in your food waste caddy: You can put pretty much any left over food in your food waste caddy, apart from oils, liquid fat, liquids and packaging. It’s worth checking your local council website to find out exactly what you can and cannot put in your food waste caddy as there may be some differences between councils.
What Christmas leftovers you can put in your compost bin - Christmas cards - Paper plates and paper napkins - Party hats - Christmas crackers – do not put in anything glittery, metallic or made from plastic film. - The jokes from your Christmas cracker - Cocktail sticks - Cardboard packaging - Vegetable and fruit peelings and salad leaves - Wrapping paper and gift tags – you cannot compost wrapping paper made from plastic film, or glittery wrapping paper and tags and remember to remove all of the tape first! Other recycling Most councils offer a boxes or bins for recycling plastics, tins and cardboard. What exactly you can put in your other recycling bins or boxes varies by council, so make sure you check on your local councils website first but you should be able to recycle the majority of your plastic, tin and cardboard waste. Recycling your Christmas tree If you’ve got a real Christmas tree this year, there are a number of ways you can recycle it. - Some councils will collect Christmas trees from households to be recycled. - Some councils will have drop off points where you can drop off your tree. - Chop your tree into very small pieces and put it in your compost bin. If possible buy a ‘living Christmas tree’ (these are trees with roots) so you can plant it in your garden after Christmas, or buy an artificial Christmas tree which is more sustainable.
